Chess ClubPlaying the game of chess has been shown to improve cognitive and spatial thinking skills, reasoning and problem-solving abilities, verbal skills and information processing. Click here for more information on the benefits of playing chess for youths. Chess Club at Oak Hill is run by parent volunteers in two sessions throughout the school year. Katie Johnson is this year's Coordinator. Chess Club meets on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:00 p.m. The Session 1 runs from October 4 through December 20. There is a $25 fee to register for each session of Chess Club.* This cost includes the cost of awards at the end of Chess Club and a contribution to a fund for replacement chess boards and pieces as they are needed. *Note: After-school families that are already paying for after-school care are exempt from the registration fee. Tournaments Oak Hill Montessori students also have the opportunity to participate in School Chess Association sponsored tournaments throughout the metro area. Tournaments are open to all kindergarten through 12th grade students (you don't have to be a member of the Chess Club to play). All players play in all 5 rounds. Participants are not eliminated if they lose, but rather paired with another player of their same skill level. The SCA website is a great resource for players and parents. Please call the office for more information on playing in a SCA-sponsored chess tournament.
